BLEEDERS “Gash” C16
(What’s for Breakfast? Records)

This is some p dope punk rock and really the only kind I’ve ever known anything about unless you count Green Day, who is my favorite band in the world and nothing like this. But that doesn’t matter cuz why would you even want to be compared to Green Day when you are making this kind of music? Prolly you wouldn’t. Or maybe you only like Green Day’s early stuff in which case maybe you wouldn’t mind. Still this tape has nothing to do with Green Day. Bleeders is doing it right. Doing a good job. Pat them on the back next time you see them and say Good job Bleeders I believe in you and I understand your vision. Their mind is in the right place and they sing about cool things like aunts that you love even though everyone else hates them. They also sing about things that are not cool at all but are good to sing about. Like when people misbehave in unforgivable ways and how it’s important to tell them to eff off and that what they have done is wrong and it would be better for everyone if they changed their ways right now by owning up and begging forgiveness. Punk rock has always been a really great way to say these kinds of things, which is probably why people invented it. In direct opposition to all that is evil. There’s lots of diff kinds of punk these days and Bleeders is the best kind, the early kind, the original kind, the kind that everyone thinks abt whenever u hear the words punk rock. I’ve never known about Bleeders before now and yet they make me feel v nostalgic for the punks of yesteryear and happy to know that they have begat the punks of today who drive their legacy forward through the dark and treacherous times.

THE SPEED BABES / ARSENE OBSCENE
“s/t split” (What’s for Breakfast?)

If you like fast short songs, and you like them loud, and you like to party, then maybe we should hang out together. While we are hanging out we can listen to a split EP that dropped on my lap the other day.

The first side starts with four fast, loud and short tracks from The Speed Babes, a Chicago garage-psych outfit led by Jesse Ewan. All four tracks have vocals dripping in reverb and loud guitars. These four songs are off of their full length album “Yellow”, which you should check out.

On the flip side is three fast punk rock tacks from Arsene Obscene. They are what I would call a garage punk band from Nice, France. Francois Ibanez screams his head off as he heavy handedly strums his guitar through a cranked amp. these songs are also featured on the full length album “Guitar Trash”. Another album you should check out. The great thing about punk is that you don’t have to understand the lyrics, it’s about the emotion conveyed.

I also want to mention the cool cover design by Nick DeMarco. I would party with that armadillo, wouldn’t you?

Cassette includes download codes and “What’s for Breakfast?” sticker.

J. R. FISHER “Fever” (What’s for Breakfast?)

J. R. Fisher an alright guy, a guy you can hang out with at the bar, a guy who’s got a day job, a guy who’s got a couple of close friends, your average Joe, your average townie. I used to live in Central Pennsylvania, and he reminds me of the blue-collar vibe of every small town sprawling suburbanly past the local bar and hardware store. I have a real soft spot for that vibe. For J. R. Fisher, it helps that he writes damn good songs for acoustic guitar. He’s not your average Central PA bar band shmuck in that sense – most of those guys just cover classic rock or country and call it a night. That’s right, Fisher’s got a repertoire of decent material – and a big ol’ chip on shoulder against Mayans, apparently, as “Mayan Punks, Fuck Off” would suggest. Besides that opening digression, he rails with humor against all kinds of backwater burg life issues, and it makes me chuckle in a wink-wink-nod-nod way. I mean, the biggest pain in his ass is “The Alternative Station” that “still sucks fucking shit.” I hear ya, J. R., I hear ya. The songs on Fever are as bare bones as it gets, but they’re nicely done. Pop a PBR and get on with it already.
