SUNSET DIVER
“Seagulls” C55
(KMAN 92.5)

I’m not even going to pretend like I know any of the 39 movies (mostly cult classics from the 50s and 60s) that Sunset Diver plunderphonixxed while creating these ambient/abstract beats, but I do recognize the name Ingmar Bergman, Andrei Tarkovsky, Federico Fellini, and Orson Welles as directors for a few of them, and I appreciate this other-worldly marriage between bygone cinematic samples and futuristic grooves and treatments. I know the term “intoxicating" is weighted and mistranslated, but godDAMN if it ain’t fitting. Perhaps “Dizzying" will suffice?

Though human voice and organic instrumentation abound throughout this release, it’s the electronic stitching and massage that swirl like lavender smoke around them, fogging the very lens of our ears’ interpretation of arcane moods and sequences that make this a real keeper.

Check this out on a hazy Sunday afternoon with nothing to do but watch the sun creep across the floor. Good times.
