There are notably separate EPs on each side of this tape, and
when I say that the first side could have been sold as bootlegged demos of
Broken Social Scene, I mean it as a compliment. The four tracks on the
“Leftover Noise” portion are pretty rad bedroom psychedelia, with creative
electronic augmentation around the percussion and oodles and oodles of reverb
on the guitar & vocals. The tone is mercurial throughout both sides, but on
this side, the shifts are much more pronounced, giving the listener one hell of
a sympathetic workout.
Side two, “Nachtmusik”, is a 16 minute dreamscape where the
scenes come and go without you even noticing you’ve changed rooms/bodies.
Guitar is replaced with violin and keyboards and a more musique concrete
approach to providing space is taken, giving the listener the chance to hear
exactly what a few different rooms in hir house sounds like when meditating on
the piano. The only part I didn’t enjoy was the metronomic techno downbeat that
drowned out two of the tinier rooms, but, hey, sometimes dreams flirt with
nightmares, right? Do yourself a favor and take the time to listen to this
quarter of an hour long piece with headphones.
