FILTHY HUNS / ROBUST WORLD split
(Golden Cloud Tapes)

You know what never goes out of style? If you said blue jeans, converse all stars and a white t-shirt ensemble, you'd be correct. But the answer I was looking for would be New England Autumn, with an emphasis on the gothic overtones of the October Halloween. For about a couple of months, New England's arboretums and trees naturally shift in color from green to yellow, orange, crimson and even purple. And for some reason, everything is spookier in New England in Autumn.

This cassette embodies this aesthetic in a found sound/acoustic guitar finger picking/electric reverberation & delay guitar/percussion/casio jam. echoing chanting, wolf cries, sounds of the night! Jams of the night! Acid testing concert vibes mixed with hardcore hocus pocus trick or treating waltzes. And then also downright folky. campfire spook out shroom trips. I since a "Harvester" influence. Oh yeah, and some downright FILTHY psychedelic blues guitar.

Really loose jamming going on, minimal vocals and some great scale searching. Echoing delay guitar layered with some looped guitar is always a nice addition to just about anything. And so is spare acoustic guitar being played by someone who knows what they're doing. This cassette is a good pick up and gets me "there", even though the beat hardly ever changes tempo and there is times it just feels meandering. Gentle acoustic guitar and halloween spook, what more could you ask for.

MICHAEL HENNING & PHILIP RINGLER
“Supplemental Dimensions” C34
(Golden Cloud Tapes)

Having listened to a few of Michael Henning’s comps, “Global Gems” and “Golden Congo 1957-1972”, I might be reading into these four tracks a deep regard for classic non-western drones and percussive timbres amidst ever shifting ambient textures. His ‘Polytexturalism’, put out by Sanity Muffin last year, was a long, wild ride, and one I honestly still haven’t given its proper due, but this shorter offering, collaborating with Philip Ringler, I’ve listened to at least a dozen times now, and can easily say that, if you get bored listening to this, it’s probably because you’re boring.

There is so much subtle giving and taking of foci, from long-held phasing cosmos to grooving symbol-tapping to delayed keys rolling; it’s easy to listen to over and over again without forming a hard opinion on what the fuck exactly just happened. If you’re a magician, that’s the point, but, if you’re a musician? It’s been pretty great to find myself nodding along with no particular beat, only to find myself, two minutes later, doing that sloooooow head-nod to what I imagine is a deep, buried tabla cadence with tasteful delay and EQing.

Also noteworthy, the final, fourth track kinda sounds to me like drunken cowboy robots at a slowed down square dance, sloppily looking for their car keys.  At first, I hated it, but now I love it so much. Give a listen for yourself by the link below!

2 X Golden Cloud Tapes

I have two more high quality releases from the Golden Cloud Tapes label to share with you today. Orchard Thief and Grapefruit (the artists), two very different musical stylings, but both present good listening experiences. For guitar-bliss fanatics who wanna zone to flowing lines of six-string chicanery I say investigate the wandering tones of OT's First Dimension Park. If walloping dizzy burbles of synth is yr bag, hop into the sound universe of Grapefruit. Blurred Tunnels is a voyage...from Friday night 'till Monday morning...ya dig? I'm a huge fan of transcendent sythn lines - amazing compositions!!

2 X Golden Cloud Tapes

WELCOME TO THE APOCALYPSE...Betcha the Mayans wouldn't use the last day on Earth to review cassettes, but that is what I do...

From the frozen cheese tundra of Wisconsin to my burrito & beer stained music room comes Golden Cloud Tapes with two very different musical tapes. The first is the wild, poly(almost a-)rhythmic maniac sounds of Dinner Music (Rick Weaver to friends and family). Titled Kissing Cousins, this half-hour affair is bonkers...and nope, its not a dramatic reinterpretation of the Elvis movie of the same name (I was secretly hoping...). Try explaining this music to grandma over the holidays and I'm sure you would find it as difficult as I do to come up with adjectives. This is plunking keys on organs and pianos while badly tap dancing on top of a drum set composing. Drive people away with Dinner Music! Mark Bradley's Temple Music on the other hand is a sober and solemn piece of minimal electronic music. Listening to this album is a peaceful and meditative activity and I will seek it out for "reading" music if silence becomes too dull. Overall, this is a tape of quality, but maybe a little on the soft side for me. Golden Cloud Tapes package their releases well and deserve to be further explored...maybe after the end times?
