BABIES IN THE BARDO “Babies in the Bardo” C52 (Sister Cylinder)

Every time I look at this tape, I’m like, “Let’s throw another baby on the bardo!” You know, like my go-to phrase whenever I affect an Australian accent – let’s throw another shrimp on the barbie? You knew that’s what I say, right?

So forgetting the general awfulness of babies and barbies and whatnot, Babies in the Bardo isn’t just a fun thing to try and untrip your tongue over. It’s actually the solo minimal darkwave/post-punk (so easy) of Early Day Miners bassist Jonathan Richardson. You may remember Early Day Miners from their tours with and/or their comparisons to Grandaddy (which may only exist in my mind – I connected those two bands somehow, and I may be making this all up, because the internet is NOT confirming my suspicions); you may remember reading about them in blogs at some point back in the day. Either way, at least one of them is back – in tape form!

So “bardo” is the Tibetan Buddhist idea of being in the state between death and rebirth. And that makes sense here, as Richardson uses synth and chugging bass and percussion to get at that and other states of uncertainty, injecting emotional throughlines we can connect to and prop ourselves up against. And no vocals! Or guitars (besides the bass). But mostly vocals, because if anything will annoy me about anything, it’s vocals. But only the annoying ones. Annoying vocals annoy me. Richardson wisely eschews them, and we can thus project our own thoughts onto the music.

Babies in the Bardo is lean, its spartan approach a boon to its listenability. Richardson connects nicely to the universal aspects of his chosen genre.

NERD PROCESSOR “a dumb fool loudly” C42 (Sister Cylinder)

First off – I love the name Nerd Processor. I love the title a dumb fool loudly. And I love the layout of this thing – how it all looks like a blueprint or a rough draft of an album cover before it takes shape as a streamlined whole.

Nerd Processor doesn’t want anything to do with a streamlined whole.

Instead, a dumb fool loudly is a celebration of the indie-est of indie rock, a throwback to C86 and lo-fi quirk rock that dotted cassette tape racks of the best record stores in the 1980s and early 1990s. I’m about to call Nerd Processor’s tunes “scrappy” tunes, but that also suggests a certain amateur quality that these songs certainly don’t possess. Instead, the “scrap” is intentional and fun, and gives these tracks a decidedly homespun charm that will win you over, over and over. In fact, repeat listens are required to catch all the elements. And I dare you to pick a favorite song – I bet it’ll be really hard to do.

Packing eleven songs into this release, the duo never runs out of ideas, and consistently explores the nooks and crannies of their idiom. The songwriting is meticulous, the mood is aloof and restrained, and the payoffs are cornucopiac. I just made that word up, like there’s a cornucopia of payoffs in a dumb fool loudly. I don’t know what that means either.

I do know you’ll enjoy every second of this tape!

SWAN WASH “Swan Wash” (Sister Cylinder)

This was that, when we guessed how to scrub a swan so that it would be proper clean and not just “nature clean,” whatever that meant, my high school science teacher! Jeez. This Swan Wash is darkwave-y sweetness with lots of delay and hammering low end. A power trio, three imaginary boys! With guitar strings that chime and drums and bass that pummel, it’s easy to scrub Swan Wash like an actual swan and behold the churning pain beneath. Spitting back into the face of convention to battle the ennui of modern living, Swan Wash keep it close, keep it secret, and let us all in on it.

Well , we chosen few anyway.

Sure to please the Alternative Nation set still plugging away at what passes for the daily grind, Swan Wash is a throwback, a delectable morsel of treated guitar and driving rhythm. Make sure you figure out how to get your hands on a copy if you’re going to be reenacting any movies John Cusack happened to be in. My Better Of Dead cosplay group is getting together next week.

FEVER DREAM HORROR SCENE “Fever Dream Horror Scene” (Sister Cylinder)

“Murk” rhymes with “lurk,” and the two words couldn’t be more appropriate to the Fever Dream Horror Scene modus operandi. Dead leaves blow in late autumn around the goth-rock trio as they perform for ghosts at cemeteries and are cheered silently by the sidelong looks of likeminded outcasts. Like a half-speed Stellastarr* worshipping at the altar of Bauhaus, the Bloomington, Indiana, trio celebrate post–All Hallows’ black masses in overdriven majesty, shattering basement windows with titanic blacklit shockwaves.

Not gonna lie, this is a lot of fun.

Reminds me of when I was in college and digging through post-punk and new wave back catalogs and mixing it with gallows humor (or just the gallows) as I barely gave a shit about anything anymore. I’m reliving that now with Fever Dream Horror Scene. You can too with one of these gnarly EPs, limited to 100.
